The Heritage Museum
The
Heritage Centre near the top of Church Lane on the left is usually referred
to as the old grammar school. It is easily recognised by the jettied first
floor, a typical medieval feature and was built in the late 15th or early
16th century.. Look out for the boy's names scratched into the window
glass and carved into some timber panels. These date from 1770.
The Painted
Room
Recently
a gem was discovered in the council house up Church Lane. During refurbishment
a rare painted room of around 1560 was uncovered. It is thought that the
room was used to house prisoners in Tudor times. The paintings were of
verses from Psalm 15, no doubt designed to return them to the straight
and narrow:
"That
in his heart regardeth not, malicious, wicked men: but those that love
and fear the Lord"

The Butchers Row Museum
Reproduction
helmets and breatplates as worn in the Battle of Ledbury in 1645 and a
small collection of musical instruments ranging from a 'hurdy-gurdy' to
a Tibetan pipe fashioned from a thigh bone are among the varied items
to be seen in the museum.
The
museum, in Church Lane, is one of a row of 15 burgage houses and shops,
many of them butchers, that ran down the middles of what is now the High
Street. They were bought out by public subscription in 1830 and one or
two were re-erected; this one used to be in the back garden of 14 High
Street.
The
museum is open daily from 11am to 5pm from Good Friday to the end of September
and at weekends only in October. Admission is free, but there is a donations
box for those who feel it worthy of support. Over 20,000 people visit
every year.
